I wasn't at all sure if I was going to like finding sagrado when I first cracked the cover on the book. I honestly thought that it was going to be one of those nostalgic trips down memory lane. View the world through rose-colored glasses sort of books and I would not be able to establish a personal connection with the characters or have a reference point for the timeframe of their world. I was soon proven very wrong within the first 20 pages I was hooked!! Mr. Carrier, positively sucked me into his universe, and I realized very quickly that this was not just a trip down memory lane, but it was a chance to listen to some poignant advice of crude by real-life experience, and the 2020 vision of hindsight. The story has qualities of Stephen King's "stand by me." And by that I mean that although the characters are adolescents. The story is not about teenagers or teenage problems. They are simply used as a catalyst to tell a much deeper and richer story and make it relatable to the audience without slapping them in the face with any high moral standpoint or worldview.It is the same for this story Shane is struggling to come to terms with the reality of the death of his father in Vietnam and the fact that his mother is going to remarry. He finds solace in the pages of "red sky at morning" a classic novel about life in New Mexico, and Shane Long's to live in the peaceful town of "Sagrado" and find his own colorful cast of characters and re-create some of the more memorable scenes of the novel such as watching an artist sketching nude model. The desire to escape his current reality drives Shane to steal his father's secret stash of money and set out on a journey to find his perfect little town where everything will be pure and clean, and he can forget about the horrible ways in which his world turned upside down and make a new life for himself in a new town.
The interesting part of the story for me was not so much the people that Shane met along and how they affected his life and decisions on his journey, but rather how he affected their lives everyone from his landlady in New Mexico to the private detective that was hired by his mother to bring him home. Shane had a lasting effect on all their alliance that indirectly made them confront and deal with their own demons, thereby enriching both Shane's life and of their own beyond measure.
Another reviewer stated that they did not find the imagery of the story very compelling than his own personal opinion and I will not work and I discount it in anyway. Each person view the world differently, all I can say is that Mr. Carrier's descriptions of Shane's travels were rich and textured and compelled me to keep turning the pages. I could see every aspect of the journey from taking his father's stash of money and the dingy bus station. I felt like I was with Shane, every step of the way, particularly in New Mexico. When on his motorcycle rides the wind was tattooing the story if his journeys on his face and hands. I was meaning to every curve and corner right along with Shane (although to be fair I am a devout motorcycle enthusiast)
I wanted to see Shane achieve his dreams and find used piece and come to terms with his new reality and family and take all the lessons of New Mexico, and uses life to better the world. I wholeheartedly agree with Peter Kelton of the Albuquerque contemporary literature examiner when he says "Roger E. Carrier tells engaging story of youth, redemption and coming-of-age in 1971 in Mexico."
Mr. Carrier is a masterful storyteller that will keep you engaged from the very first word to the last. I turned pages so fast that I practically got blisters on my finger, and I absolutely cannot wait to see what other stories. Mr. Carrier has to tell I'm sure this is only the start of what will be a very illustrious literary career.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Roger E. Carrier’s – Finding Sagrado ! And I have already passed the kindle version to some of my friends ..! The price of the kindle edition was also not much - just $3.03 !
Great plot . I liked the book and was moved by the fact that the young boy was so struck by harsh realities of life – one being the death of his father recently , the author used the right amount of emotion to portray how the main character of the story- Shane, ventures to live his fantasy in search of a fictional town Sagrado which only existed in his favorite book which happened to be – Red Sky At Morning . Reading this novel also instigated an urge in me to read Red Sky at Morning. So perhaps that’s what I’m going to look for next ..
Great writing style and language was too easy to comprehend .. English is my Second Language and I had absolutely no trouble in reading and understanding ! There were some great characters apart from Shane as well. And it was good to read that there were so many of them who helped him in his dream voyage!
I personally recommend this book to everyone and also I will eagerly wait for the author’s next novel !!
Shane Russell is suffering from the lost of his Father, and it’s bringing up old feeling of abandonment from the death of his mother years earlier. In his effort to deal with his pain, he starts on a journey to recreate the tales in his favorite novel Red Sky at Morning. He leaves his life of comfort and travels to a New Mexico town searching for some sense of belonging. Along the way he meets a cast of characters Sam the former professor who was now a homeless person and an older widow named Lillian. They share their wisdom and he carries them on his journey to find a new life.
As he makes a life in his version of Sagrado he is determined to recreate as many scenes from the novel as possible. From his artistic encounters with Ellen to his Relationship with Sandra. He even finds some unlikely relationships like the one with Birdie and the up and down relationship with Connor. He soon starts to enjoy his new life and let’s that heal his pain.
The author did a great job of weaving the tales of the two stories together.The dynamic brought an unusual twist and I found myself wanting more. But ultimately his journey helped him to grow into a man and make peace with his family and with the loss he has suffered.

I would like to add the name Roger Carrier to that list. As long as there are teenagers, these kinds of stories will never go out of style. (Heck, even a few of us middle-agers enjoy them.) However, like anything, the coming-of-age story can be done well or poorly. Carrier gets it very right in Finding Sagrado. Even for a reader not familiar with Bradford's Red Sky, (which Carrier pays homage to in Finding Sagrado) one can't help but quickly become engrossed in the story of Shane Russell It's 1971 and 17-year-old Shane, alienated by the loss of his father in Viet Nam and a stepmother with a new boyfriend, runs away, in search of the literal and figurative warmth of the New Mexico town and people he discovered between the pages of Bradford's book. It's a clever approach but one that never overshadows Carrier's actual story, which reads as well as the best coming-of-age stories, with colorful and poignant characters, natural dialog, a little suspense, a bit of sex and drugs and Carrier's overall great attention to detail and human emotion and motivation. I can easily see this one ending up on some classroom reading lists.
