Well, this book certainly was not what I was expecting! In truth, I avoided the blurb before reading it. I am a fan of Rachel Vincent so I knew it would be good without investigating what the story was about... and I was right. Though unexpected, I was captivated by the story from beginning to end. This dark fantasy was a blend of mythology and horror set in the backdrop of a cruel and unusual carnival like you've never seen before. The world of Metzger's Menagerie is split between humans and non-humans, a/k/a cryptids. The cryptids have lost their all their rights to life, liberty and freedom. They can be bought, sold and disposed of at just about any human's whim. They are our underdogs of the story, and our heroine, Delilah, quickly finds herself a member of the cryptids after living as a human for nearly thirty years. While she has always been sympathetic to the cryptids, she never really understood until the shoe was on the other foot. Losing everything in the blink of an eye, Delilah's life went from mundane to nightmare very quickly. But Delilah was a good heroine. She had strength of character and refused to be cowed. She continued to speak up for what was right and wrong, and did everything within her power to help those around her. I admired her quite a bit.
I was absolutely fascinated by all of the other captives and characters in the menagerie. They came from every walk of life, from mythology to paranormal, including some that I had never heard of before. Each one added a unique aspect to the story, and I was glad that we got to see different points of view as we went along.
Some of this story and inhumane treatment were hard to read. The menagerie masters were truly cruel and sadistic, and I think we may see worse as the series continues. So I would not recommend this book for younger readers or the squeamish. But if you like dark fantasy and mythology, I think you will like this one.
If you are an audio listener, then you will like this one as well. The narrator did a great job distinguishing between characters and giving them their own voice. She was able to affect believable personas for both sexes, which is always important with a single narrator. She also didn't try to oversell her performance, and kept the reading at pace and tone that fit the story. I will look for more of her work in the future.
Now, I'm off to listen to the next book, Spectacle.

Menagerie Rachel Vincent 9780778316053 Books Reviews
Menagerie is the first book in the Menagerie series and it was amazing. Deliah Marlow has grown-up in a small town in Oklahoma, she has friends, neighbors, family and a job like most people but Deliah isn't exactly what she appears to be. One night she visits a traveling circus full of the creatures of myth because in this world they do exists, something happens and Deliah finds out that she is a creature of myth herself. All her rights, worldly possessions and her freedom are taken from her and she is sold to the menagerie. There Deliah discovers all the injustices and see the world in a whole new light, she figures out what she is and that she has a destiny far greater than she could have ever dreamed, that's if she can survive the menagerie of course.
Deliah is smart, feisty, brave, kind and so much more than human. She has such a big heart and she takes action and says the things that others need to hear event if they don't accept it. She went through a lot but she didn't let them break her, she stood strong and cared for those around her. I love that she was a smart-aleck and she told people how it was, that she wasn't meek and that she was more human than any of the humans that were around her. She owned her shit and wanted others to own theirs plus she was badass, I wish I could delve more into it but I can't without revealing a major plot point.
The characters were unique and even though it's told from multiple points-of-view I wish I could have known some of the other characters a little bit better. However I did get to know Gallagher and he was quite the surprise. I didn't expect Gallagher and while I did figure out the ending I was absolutely shocked by who Gallagher was and everything he did. His actions, his personality, everything seem to fit but also not fit after everything was revealed.
I love books that are circus/carnival themed, I also love the macabre and I have a great love for mythology. In Menagerie I get all three and everything was done so well. Plus it's told through multiple points of view and it has newspaper clips in-order to give readers information about past events. Rachel has manage to stuff so much mythology in this book I am talking Celtic, Greek and probably others that I can't think of right now plus so much supernatural lore because it's filled with almost every supernatural you can think of.
While all of that was great there was a lot of darkness in this book. It's about what really makes people human. The treatment of all living creatures, slavery and people questioning their own moral compass. There is abuse, the misuse of a government and other darker themes. This is not a light book and there are gruesome events that are chilling so let this be a warning Menagerie is not for the faint of heart.
The writing and world building was good however it was the plot that was amazing. The story held my interest all the way through, I had all the feelings, was so excited when I was able to read it and had me on edge whenever something was happening or I thought that something was going to happen. I had an emotional headache while I was reading the last 1/6th of this book. I was that invested in the characters and everything that was happening.
The Menagerie was a unique look on the circus world and while it had it's fair share of darkness and injustice it also had excitement, hope and close-knit bonds. I loved this book and I can't wait to read the rest of the series because I have questions that are dying to be answered. Up next in the series is Spectacle because this menagerie is putting up one helluva show.
"I'm better with logic, so let me put this 'gratitude' in perspective for you. I appreciate the fact that you've kept me alive, Gallagher, but I am entitled to life. I shouldn't need you to keep me from starving to death, and that's really all you're doing. You're flatlining on the morality EKG, expecting me to praise you as if you'd spiked an actual ethical pulse."
That is our protagonist a woman stripped of her legal rights and thrown into a cage, where she is starved, humiliated, beaten, and threatened with rape. And yet, she never loses sense of the rights she should have as a living, sentient being. She never gives in to the horrible "girl needs help so she falls in love with the first kind hand she meets" trope.
Gallagher, by the way, is also really kick-ass. He is one of the men who run The Menagerie, and he is clever and ruthless, but with this enormous capacity to care, and it's all written in a way I haven't seen before. I did not see his big reveal coming which is silly because, looking back, it's spelled out for us.
I loved this book. I devoured it, I got into it. I cheered for so many characters. I hated a few--and I was supposed to hate them, too! That never happens. I usually just end up hating the main character.
Now, some parts were a bit rushed but I'm trying to avoid spoilers, and others felt completely unresolved, like the thing with the werewolves. But I think that comes down to this being the first in a series. I can't wait for the next one.
