OMG! First and foremost I want to thank Caitlin Matthews, for this is an amazing resource book. It answers so many burning questions in terms of utilizing not only the LeNormand symbols, but how to apply those insets. While I already had a method in which to apply the insets, Matthews expanded it beyond my expectations! Matthews discusses timing, weather, various traits and attributes in depth. There are case studies, example readings and a plethora of practice material and exercises. For those of you who like charts - they're here for just about every imaginable correspondence. Some of which you will find in other books, but so much more you can't find anywhere else. I've been reading playing cards for over 27 years and added the Lenormand during the past 5+ years. I strayed towards Tarot for many of those 27 years and combined my knowledge of both, but when I stumbled onto the Lenormnd, I felt as if I'd come home. This book has added more dimension to my readings than anything else out on the market. Believe me, I know, because I own most of the current books on this subject and none compare to this one. This is truly all you need to work with these cards. I don't care what level you are operating at, beginner to advanced will gain knowledge from Matthews. Yes, I already knew the basics, and even some of the more advanced methods, but here you will find so many ways of looking at the individual cards and combos, as well as different ways in which to read the grand tableau's (yes that's a plural on tableau!). She shows the traditional 4x8x4 as well as the 9x4, but it doesn't stop there, you'll find counting methods, mirroring and knighting. I've only just scratched the surface of what's available in this book. I think the single most important thing I learned from Matthews is how the suits actually do make sense when paired with the symbol - but you'll have to read the book to find out more. You will not be disappointed in this book. I can't encourage you enough to add this to your collection. In fact, throw the rest out" this is all you need. The Complete Lenormand Oracle Handbook Reading the Language and Symbols of the Cards edition by Caitlín Matthews Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
This one of the most comprehensive books I have ever seen in teaching the art of cartomancy including the Tarot for which I have collected so many books. I highly recommend this book for your training if you are just beginning Lenormand. I would caution you however to be sure which camp you subscribe to in choosing your Lenormand meanings. You must be clear if you are drawn to German traditional meanings or if you agree with the French Modern meanings. It can be easy to get mixed up as you are learning from her book if you are not clear and you can end up being mixed up. before you start reading or learning you should study both and decide which group of meaning you subscribe to then you can remain clear as you read her meanings. Most of the meanings will lean in the same direction however for 11-Whip and 30-Lily you must know which one you want to represent sex, and for work(employment) you must be clear if you want 14-Fox or 35-Anchor. Please see this site for help if you need it. it will show you both lists and you can decide. whatever you do make sure you work with the same meanings consistently from one set or the other! Cut and paste this address [...]
As a liftetime Tarot reader, I was initially stumped by all the attention Lenormand-style decks have gotten in the past years. In fact, I dismissed the cards after purchasing a set. Luckily, I picked this book up because I was teaching a Tarot class and wanted to get a better understanding of Lenormand. And pow—after reading a few chapters I realized what I had been missing Lenormand is an entirely different system of divination, with rules far different than what I was used to in Tarot. Caitlin Matthews does a great job of explaining the system and getting you doing readings in a very short time, but the book is also a master class in the more complex parts of the system.
This is an excellent resource for all levels of Lenormand readers. It's one of the few that helps one understand the playing card inserts and how to use them in different ways in order to enrich your readings, plus this book has wonderful exercises to help you learn how to use Lenormand cards in general and also all of the layouts that are included, some of which I'd never seen before. This is a resource I'll use for a good many years to come for there is so much useful information in it that I'll go back to it again and again.
The Complete Lenormand Oracle Handbook is the first book I've purchased on Lenormand. I have nothing to compare it to, but I will say it's full of useful information. It actually feels kind of overwhelming. The book is called "complete" for a reason. The book does have useful info, but IMO, it's more in-depth than I wanted as a beginner. When I'm learning something new, I like to start with the absolute basics. Keep it simple to start. If you choose this book, consider reading one chapter a week before proceeding to the next chapter. Perhaps I found it overwhelming because I read several chapters in one sitting.
The author provides several possible meanings for each card. There are at least 50 or more keywords you can apply to each card. And then it says to decide which keywords you want to assign to each card. Doing it that way is supposed to make interpreting the cards much easier. So although the "garden" card can have 100 keywords associated with it, you should choose only two or three to apply. But it just felt overwhelming to me, trying to decide which keywords to choose.
One thing I found especially useful is there are practice exercises in each chapter to help you develop your skills in reading the cards. There are also several spreads included, but I stick with the 3 or 5 card spreads.
I was looking for more of a "quick-start" to get started with my Lenormand deck. After I ordered this book, I discovered the author has a more beginner-friendly version available with her Lenormand deck. If I had known, I would've got that instead. But don't let my impatience put you off the book. It really is packed with information about the Lenormand cards and how to read them. Just take it slow.
