Everything needs editing. And I do mean everything: the plot, the grammar, the word choice, and the character development. Yes, the story has potential, but this is one time being able to self publish is not a positive. Exes and Goals seems like it is still in its earliest stages of drafting. Exes and Goals A Slapshot Novel Slapshot Series Book 1 edition by Heather C Myers Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
After reading the 2nd book in this series, I had to check out this one! They each work as a standalone and I had no trouble following the story in book 2, but I wanted to know more about these great characters. What I found was another fun read by Heather Myers. Harper and Zach are so perfect for each other. Harper has some issues to work through, but she doesn't let them stand in her way and Zach is just an all around great guy - at least when he's off the ice. Bonus points to the author for not just saying "He's a hockey player" and calling it a sports romance. We get actual play! Don't worry if you don't know anything about hockey. It's written so you don't have to be a die-hard fan of the sport to understand what's going on. Overall, it's a great story and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the genre.
.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Exes & Goals Book 1 in the Slapshot Series by Heather C. Myers is a New Adult, Contemporary Sports Romance. The minute Zachary Ryan, center for the Newport Beach Seagulls sees Harper Crwaford at Taboo nightclub, he has to get to know her better. As a blogger for the Newport Beach Seagulls, Harper Crawford is living her dream. She doesn't want to get involved with a hockey player but he plans to change her mind. A well-written, very enjoyable read, with a good storyline and likable, sexy characters. A good beginning to a new series but can be read as a standalone.
Awesome beginning to a new sports romance series with relatable characters and riveting plot that kept me glued to the book from beginning to end. I loved the chemistry and interactions between Zachary Ryan, center for the Newport Beach Seagulls hockey team and team blogger Harper Crawford. This is a must-read for fans of hockey team romance and I can hardly wait to read more in the Slapshot Series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy and enjoyed it so much I purchased a copy so I can read it again later.
Great first book in the series. I really enjoyed meeting the Gulls and especially their owner. She took a chance of hiring Harper to be the team blogger, which turned out to be a brilliant move. Harper took an even bigger chance on Zachary Ryan, the team's new center who was surrounded by rumor and personal controversy. The two of them were great together and I really liked how Zach came to Harper's defense when her ex resurfaced.
Also, as a big hockey fan, it's hard to read a story where the author doesn't know the sport so the description of the game or even the equipment is flawed, but that definitely wasn't the case here.
I can't wait to read more about the Gulls in the next book, Black Eyes and Blue Lines.
The Newport Beach Seagulls hockey team is badly in need of a thorough revamping of its social image after a series of headline-worthy events taint the team with controversy. The team's new owner, Seraphina Hanson, hires an official team blogger to interview and highlight the new team and members she managed to pull together this season as well as cover their community outreach events, Harper Crawford. She was pretty much smitten with the new first line center, Zachary Ryan, as soon as she saw him, but she came with the past experience of an ex that was controlling and demeaning to her, so she wasn't quite ready for Zack. Zack himself was cast off and traded to his new team, complete with his own emotional baggage. The two have enough to overcome just trying to succeed in their new jobs, without taking on each others' pasts...or are they willing to do so?
This was a very enjoyable read, with a good cast of characters. I admired their strength and integrity, their ability to see each other for what they were, giving themselves the chance to dig deeper to make up their own minds and not being swayed by rumor. This is my first ever read from this author, and I definitely look forward to reading more of her stories!
Thought about the book Adding in two new charters for the first novel of this series I was a little taken back by that. I was hoping that there would have been a better understanding of the relationships that the author had started her readers out on. Finding that some of the couples that worked so hard to be with each other had broken up and not knowing why made me very mad and upset. But over all this book was great and had a great story to be told. Yet again falling in love with Zach and Harp as couple that fight through so much to finally be together. With Harp’s ex finding a way to try and pull Harp back into his grip but Zach comes out of left field and messes up his plan and changing Harper to fight harder to be the person that she knows she can be.
Thought about the writing and layout of the book The book over all was a great read. The errors were a lot less in this book than they were in the ones before. I still love the fact that from the being I am hooked and could not put the book down until I was done.
What I liked The story as a book over all was great and like I said the author did a great job tell the story at hand. I am a hockey fan and this just pulled me right in from the start and could not stop reading it.
What I didn’t like The only thing I did not like was that instead of looking deeper into the background and future of the charters that the author had already wrote about, she adds in new charters and drops the bomb that four of her other charters had broken up without knowing why. As a reader, I find that leaving this information out could be a big turn away.
Would I recommend Yes, I would!
