Did you ever read a book wherein one of the characters was so monstrous that you felt like killing him? That's the feeling that I got while reading about what Moody did to Betty. Betty was the most courageous woman I've ever read about. She tells the story about herself and her daughter without looking for pity. She just tells the story as it was....and what a story! I thoroughly enjoyed this harrowing but hopeful book.Tags : Not Without My Daughter [Betty Mahmoody] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. 'You are here for the rest of your life. I have seen the movie and now cannot get it on DVD. I don't know why. It needs to be offered to many who do not know this story of survival. I loved the book. The movie, however, is nothing like the book and what Betty had to do to get out of Iran. I would recommend this book to everyone.
On the cover is written the word "Spellbinding". It most certainly was. I had only seen about half of the Sally Field movie and saw Betty on a talk show not long after the book came out. An unbelievable story of a courage and determination for both the mother and daughter. One can't begin to imagine what they went through. The book was hard to put down and many a chapter had me sitting on the edge of my seat. An excellent book.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys autobiographies. For me, it was hard to put down this book, because of the writing style and the fact that I knew the story was true. I saw the movie before I read the book and I'm glad I did, because I would have been disappointed had it been the other way around. It's not possible to completely tell this story in a 2-hour movie. It is also sobering to know that Betty's story represents many women in the same situation, who will never have the opportunity to find freedom to write this kind of book.
I took this book to St Lucia on my month long vacation.
I could not put this book down when I got back from the beach.
I read at night in the hammock and then in bed.
I could hear Sally Fields voice narrate like the movie.
I always like the book better for some reason.
What can I say--READ THIS! Then read it again, pass it on, I first read this book years ago when it hit the market. I loaned it and lost track of it, so I bought it again. I re-read it and was still entranced by the excellent, page-turning excitement the story offered. A true story, it points out how cultural differences must be addressed early on in a relationship to avoid heartache and tragedy later. I feel this story is timeless and crosses all cultural lines.
As a high school teacher, this book should be REQUIRED READING for every high school student (read "female"). The world is a dangerous, sinister place for those who are naive...and when Betty Mahmoody innocently followed her Iranian husband to Iran, she never even checked what rights she was surrendering. And she surrendered plenty & as such, lived through a nightmare of hell. I showed the film (starring Sally Field) to my sophomore, junior & senior girls to remind them that not all countries treat women in a sane manner as they're accustomed to in this country. There were brave Iranian citizens who facilitated her escape & if caught, would have paid with their lives. I reminded them that the next time they complained because their prom dress wasn't the color they wanted or they didn't like their new hairstyle, they should remember that most of the world's women have it a whole lot worse. This book brings that truth home in a realistic, human way.
I simultaneously wriggled in my chair and clenched my fists as I learned of the horrors this woman and her daughter endured. I had seen the movie and was aware of the outcome, but the story is so well told that I worried that the actual story would have a different, less thrilling ending. The way women were treated in Iran is a tragedy! It's stunning that The author went on to help others in similar situations versus curling up in a ball and hiding out for the remainder of Moody's life. How courageous!! An important, eye-opening read!
